I just wanted to thank you for inviting Siena to participate in Moon Fest. She truly enjoyed herself and my family really had a wonderful time at the show. It was our first time in attendance and we plan to attend in the future. We enjoyed every performance. Thank you for giving my daughter this wonderful opportunity. Have a great day.

Held by the Chinese Culture Institute of Great Windsor, the event featured Chinese dancing, Chinese singing and a kung fu exhibition — but also performances of European ballet, North American folk music and hip-hop, and Egyptian bellydancing.
“We believe that in order to introduce people to Chinese culture, we should not only involve the Chinese community,” said Sabrina McCoy-Hwang, an organizer and spokeswoman for the CCIGW.
The mid-autumn moon festival dates back centuries if not millennia into Chinese history. According to the lunar calendar, it marks the time of the year when the moon is the fullest.
McCoy-Hwang said the CCIGW has annually arranged a moon festival event since 2006, but this year was the first time the group held the gathering at the Capitol Theatre.
An estimated 500 people attended the show.
Teenage and child members of the CCIGW performed colourful fan and umbrella dances on stage.
“It brings people together,” said 15-year-old dancer Vivian Yuen about the moon festival.
In the lobby, attendees could purchase and eat inexpensive mooncakes — the sweet pastry that’s traditionally eaten during the festival.
The dense desserts consist of lotus seed paste covered with a thin golden crust. More elaborate versions of mooncakes have an egg yolk embedded in the paste. “It tastes really good. I’ve been eating it all my life,” Yuen said.
Another performer, Malaysian-born Grace Wong, sang for the crowd “evergreen” Chinese songs, as well as a more pop-influenced song with back-up dancers and costumes.
She described the moon festival as being like Thanksgiving for the Chinese community. “Everybody all together, like family.” © Copyright (c) The Windsor Star
